“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3 (NABRE)
There is peace, and then there is perfect peace. God promised perfect peace in the above scripture; with a simple condition – let your mind be focused on Him. This is similar to last week’s main verse, “Be still and know that I am God…” One thing these two verses of scripture have in common is the call to ignore everything else and give our full attention to God. We are to acknowledge Him as the only One who should be in control of every aspect of our lives and the world in which we live.
Achieving this is simple. God will not demand from us what He has not made provision for or given us the ability to accomplish. Paul admonished believers in the book of Colossians regarding how to keep our minds fixed on God. He said, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2). The Message version of the bible puts this in simpler terms – “Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.”
The shuffling of our eyes around our circumstances rather than on God is why our problems persist. Until we trust absolutely in Him, and refuse to be moved in our walk with Him, we will not be ready for God’s perfect peace. Our desire should be the pursuit of things that have eternal value and not just anything we have a feel for.
We need to give more time to seeking God’s presence and acquainting ourselves with Him. Once we position ourselves to receive from God, whatever He tells us becomes the key to the peace of mind we are searching for, as long as we believe. When we desire to know what is happening in His kingdom and desire to seek His will, then peace will follow.
The perfect peace of God comes from being blinded to what is going on around us. It does not matter if the mountains are moving or not, or if the sea is roaring and the earth is shaking, once our mind is fixed on God we will experience His perfect peace. Let’s trust in the Lord with all our heart and we will begin to see things from His perspective.
