Be Still!

“Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.” Psalm 46:11(NABRE)

The Psalmist wrote of the roaring of the sea, the moving of the mountains, and the shaking of the earth. It is in the midst of these occurrences that the Lord commanded in His word to, “Be still and know that I am God…” In examining the full context of the above scripture, we can determine, from the scenarios and incidents that led to this instruction, that there was no normalcy. That command is not meant to be executed in an atmosphere where there is normalcy.

As the earth and the world continues to spiral in the wrong direction, the Word of God becomes the only crucial thing to sustain us. However, being able to obey that commandment in the midst of a tumultuous situation is where a lot of people have failed. God’s Word is always contrary to the events around us. Therefore, it is now left to us to determine and make our choice of whether we will listen to God or allow ourselves to get caught up with circumstances around us. Until we learn how to receive His Word as it is, we are bound to struggle with the truth.

The commandment of the Lord is to be obeyed without excuse. There are many commandments stated in the scriptures for our daily admonition and to assist us in overcoming every challenge we face. As we examine one of these laws it won’t be surprising to discover how essential the application influences what happens to us daily. Jesus warned, in Matthew chapter 6, that worrying is a pointless and fruitless adventure. Nothing is achievable while we worry. Therefore, Christ said, “Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span.” Matthew 6:27.

The instruction is short and simple – stop worrying! Yet this seems to be one of the most challenging revelations ever given to man. People tend to worry about everything, even though the only thing it accomplishes is to add stress that incapacitates them from enjoying the fullness of God.

Obedience is essential in abiding in the purpose of God and benefitting from His glory. God will ask us to do things that seem impossible to our physical senses, but they really are not. However tough they may seem, His commandments are not there for us to struggle with obeying; we just have to rely on the Holy Spirit to help us live by them.
